Rooted in Convenience: Dental Implants Done Right in Staten Island

Here at Healthy Smiles, we’ve reimagined what it means to get dental implants in Staten Island in 2025. Contact us today to schedule your initial consultation!

They need no introduction, but we’ll give them one, anyway.

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of metal (usually titanium) that are surgically inserted into the jawbone to replace missing teeth — acting as a stable foundation for dentures, crowns and bridges.

They basically replace teeth that otherwise couldn’t be saved.

And for years — even decades — the process for getting implants remained the same. Patients would first meet with their Staten Island dentist before being referred to a surgeon, who performs the surgery.

All of that just to be sent back to their dentist for a follow-up.

If it sounds excessive, that’s because it is — or at least it was.

But that was then — and this is now.

It’s an exciting time for dental implants in Staten Island and Dr. Joseph Cipriano at Healthy Smiles is proud to usher in a new, evolved and more modern way of approaching the dental implant process.

Dental Implants Re-Imagined at Healthy Smiles

From start to finish — that’s our guarantee.

Here at Healthy Smiles, our modern approach to dental implant surgery is designed to make the process more predictable, convenient and streamlined for the Staten Island community, says Dr. Joseph Cipriano.

“Surgeons, for the most part, don’t have the end result in mind,” he adds.

“You’re going to go to a surgeon, they’re going to place an implant, and then you’re going to have to go back to a restorative dentist to build the end result. Which, ultimately, that’s what patients care about.”

Instead of making our patients go from one office to the next, we do everything in-house.

From start to finish.

“My hands are on it from day one and I’m able to paint the picture or the picture that the patient is looking to achieve by keeping every aspect in line from the start to finish,” Dr. Cipriano says.

That means our patients only need to visit one specialist — and that’s us!

“For the most part, 99% of the cases stay with us,” Dr. Cipriano adds. “You’re seeing the same face up front and in the back. And it maintains our guarantee to make sure the patient is happy no matter what.”

What to Expect From Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implants aren’t something that can be done in one visit.

Before surgery can begin, Dr. Joseph Cipriano must first meet with each individual patient to discuss their goals, analyze their teeth and, perhaps most importantly, ensure they’re a good candidate for implants.

Those who aren’t good candidates will be given an alternative treatment plan.

Those who are good candidates are generally five steps away from new teeth — though that process can take several months, depending on the health of your teeth and preparation needed.

Let’s take a closer look at the five primary stages of dental implant surgery

  • Stage 1: extract the existing damaged or decaying tooth (or teeth), while thoroughly cleaning the extraction site to avoid and prevent an infection.
  • Stage 2: though not everyone requires it, bone grafting involves replacing bone on the jaw to ensure there’s a strong foundation for the implant.
  • Stage 3: the dental implant is placed into the jawbone, triggering osseointegration where new bone cells grow on and around the implant surface.
  • Stage 4: once the implant is fused to the bone, your dentist attaches the abutment (a connector piece) to the implant and waits for the area to heal.
  • Stage 5: your dentist takes impressions of the abutment and surrounding teeth to fabricate the prosthetic tooth or “crown”, which is then attached to the abutment.

It’s a long process, but Dr. Joseph Cipriano and his talented team of dental experts will be there with you every step of the way — from start to finish. And you’ll get a fresh new set of sparkling teeth as a reward!

How to Care for Your New Dental Implants

Congratulations, your new smile is complete — but treatment doesn’t stop there.

A few weeks after the crowns, or implant-supported bridge has been placed, your dentist will ask you to return for a follow-up exam to ensure the healing process — as well as the end results — are going as planned.

They’ll also ask you to return every six months (give or take) for regular maintenance.

But the most important maintenance is what happens at home. Your dentist will give you a set of aftercare instructions to follow as your teeth and gums heal — as well as tips for long-term care and maintenance.

Here are some of the things your dentist may ask of you post-surgery:

  • Use an ice pack on the cheek near the surgical site to reduce swelling in the first 24–48 hours
  • Stick to soft, easy-to-chew foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies for the first week
  • Brush your teeth carefully, avoiding the surgical area for the first few days
  • Do not smoke or use straws, as these can interfere with healing
  • Regular check-ups ensure proper healing and allow your dentist to address any concerns early
  • Floss daily, using tools like water flossers or interdental brushes to clean around the implant
  • Consume foods rich in vitamins and minerals, like calcium and vitamin D, to support bone and gum health
  • Avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or pens, which can damage the restoration

Dental implants, like natural teeth, are prone to plaque buildup, infection and gum disease, which can compromise the stability, longevity and function of the implants — ultimately defeating its purpose.

With proper care and maintenance, they can and will last you a lifetime — so don’t neglect our advice!
