Experiencing chronic tooth pain? Then you’re not alone! Many people suffer from toothaches that simply won’t go away, and they can be caused by a number of factors, such as tooth decay, gum disease or dental trauma. Fortunately at our dental practice in Staten Island we have seen it all! And we have a number of dental procedures that can help to alleviate chronic tooth pain and restore your oral health.
We have written a number of procedures in this article for helping to treat chronic tooth pain.
Root canal treatments are a common procedure to help remove any infected or inflamed pulp tissue from the inside of a tooth. This type of procedure can be extremely effective in helping to remove chronic tooth pain caused by deep cavities and other dental issues. During a root canal procedure, we will first numb the affected area, and make an opening in the tooth to help remove the damaged pulp. After the removal, to fill in that space, a special material is added to protect the tooth from further damage. You may experience mild discomfort, but this can usually be managed with over the counter pain medication.
Dental implants are often a popular treatment option used for missing teeth but they can also be used to help treat chronic tooth pain caused by tooth loss. When a tooth is missing, the teeth surrounding the missing tooth can start to shift out of place and cause bite problems, which could potentially lead to jew pain and headaches. Dental implants can help to restore bite issues and alleviate chronic tooth pain by replacing the missing tooth with a prosthetic tooth root and crown. The implant procedure involves surgically placing a titanium post into the jawbone, allowing it to fuse with the bone over time, and then attaching a custom-made crown to the top. After the procedure, you may experience some soreness and swelling, but this should subside within a few days.
Another potential cause of chronic tooth pain can be caused by periodontal gum disease, which can lead to gum recession, bone loss and potentially tooth loss if left untreated. Periodontal therapy treatment involves deep cleaning the teeth and gums to remove plaque and tarter building, smoothing out rough spots on the root of the tooth to prevent further accumulation of bacteria whilst also addressing any other underlying dental issues that may contribute to the problem.
Depending on how severe your case is, your dentist may recommend non surgical methods such as scaling, root planing, or surgical methods such as gum grafting or bone regeneration. After the procedure has taken place, you may experience some tenderness and bleeding but this should improve within a few days of the treatment.
